As the solar industry matures, in addition to large-scale open fields more and more small-scale complex roofs are equipped with solar energy systems. Today, even building integrated (BIPV) systems are starting to be competitive alternatives in some scenarios. But from an inverter perspective the built-up environment poses challenges, like complex shadows and orientations.  Challenges that can’t be met with string inverters or optimizers.

Microinverters: The smartest choice

  • More cost effective

    On the surface, string inverters seem like a good deal. Add up the costs and you get a different story. If you get onsite and have to run extra conduit to move the inverter out of direct sunlight, costs escalate. Or, if the homeowner wants the inverter moved for aesthetic reasons, costs go up again.

    String inverters also require:

    • 2 conduit runs (AC + high voltage DC)
    • Mounting a string inverter and DC optimizers
    • Surprise cost overruns if inverter can’t be mounted near the service panel
  • More production

    Third-party studies have shown that Autarco microinverters produce more energy than the leading string and DC-optimized string inverters.

  • Safer installation

    String inverter systems have high voltage DC, which presents risks for customers and installers. String inverters can have “rapid shutdown” workarounds to lower the risk of high voltage DC, but these only mitigate some risk. They do not fully remove it. Microinverters, by contrast, are low voltage DC by design.

    • String inverter may remain charged even after rapid shutdown is activated
  • More reliable

    Compared with string inverters, microinverters are the least failure-prone choice by a mile. When string inverters fail, the entire system goes down, necessitating emergency maintenance. This costs money and diverts installers from doing what they do best: installing systems.

Z-Wave is far more reliable than WiFi and it is the leading protocol for wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and internet-of-things (IoT) applications. It easily integrates in the Autarco Smart Home platform and other Z-Wave products.


All other microinverters have a so called “potted design”. This means that the internal chamber of the enclosure is filled with an encapsulating compound which effectively makes the entire product a solid block.

The Autarco XSX microinverter is designed with the crade-to-cradle philosophy in mind. It’s PCB is coated with a layer of transparent conformal coating rather than potting. This more modern technique is lighter and easier to inspect, test, and repair. It also allows all durable materials to be 100% recyclable.
